I am sorry to say that i dislike this movie. It's plain and simple and i don't think my mind can be changed. I saw all the symbolism and connections and universal truths but for some reason i could not stay interested. Perhaps it was the black and white, however All Quit On the Western Front was very enjoyable for me. Maybe it was, like Mr. Bennet explained in class, that mood played a huge part in it and i havn't been having the best couple of months. Nonetheless, it did not keep me interested except for one theme. The theme of the loss of innocence with the sled being rosebud and the symbol really appealed to me. He died alone in a castle he built to honor himself and was alienated from anyone and everyone. In the end he drove his wife away, the one who didn't know who he was in the beginning but liked him anyway.
What kind of person would he have been if he stayed with his parents?
I really don't know why i don't like this movie. I watched it over at home and I felt nothing for the characters, i wasn't really held in suspense or my moods swayed. I hope this doesn't affect my grade... lol
Charles Kane is not a man at all. He is still the same scared little boy taken away from his home and his family, lost in the wilderness, scarred for life and seemingly irreversible damaged.
ReplyDeleteMore of the only thing i like about the movie.
A good movie for me is one that keeps me interested in the characters, in the plot, it needs to keep my interest. I feel all this movie did was insult my intelligence in not seeing all the symbolism and connections.
Then agian i didn't think shakespeare was ll that good when i first started reading it, but have grown to love him.
Still i would be lying to say that i enjoyed the film, and maybe I should watch it later in my life to appreciate it.
I didn't like the movie that much either to be honest. But I think it's because the movie itself is not interesting(to me at least), what makes the movie so highly acclaimed is the great cinematogrophy. This isn't the type of movie people like to watch on a saturday night.
ReplyDeleteNah, your grade isn't contingent on loving the film. However, you don't mention directly that you were absent one day and came in very late another. Watching part of it on Youtube later isn't really the same. However, I'll respect your statement and Kamil's. Ultimately, however, I'd prefer greater analysis. You state that there was no character development, or I think you say that. It's not clear. But, I felt the characters were very well drawn. To criticise a film becuase you are unable to see all the connections seems unfair. You should criticize yourself, not the film.
ReplyDeleteBut, there was a time I didn't like CK much myself. I thought it was too contrived. I liked it very much in this particular viewing.
So i will definitely give it another chance later in life. And i think the character development was great! It just failed at keeping me interested in it and that's what i truly look for in a film. And I think I'm fine with finding connections.
ReplyDeleteIn all Quiet on the Western Front I saw all kinds of symbolism and connections, but i also definetely felt for the characters and connected with them on an emotional level. So, since i cared about them, it made me linger and sit at the dge of my seat to see what happens next. That didn't happen for me in Citizen Kane.
Agian this just might be my age or emotional state during this time, but it just didn't appeal to me.
